Dr. Peek is an Assistant Dean for Recruitment in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Professor and Graduate Program Director for the Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health at University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB). She is also a Fellow at the Sealy Center on Aging. She received her Ph.D. in Sociology from Duke University in 1996 where she focused on aging, stress, and mental health. She then went on to a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Florida School of Medicine. Since joining the department in 2000, she has served as the principal investigator for an R01 focusing on marriage and health among older Mexican Americans, a core project for a P50 Center for Population Health and Health Disparities examining the stress process among Mexican Americans, and two National Institutes of Health subcontracts focusing on aging and ethnic variations in stress and stress-related biomarkers. She has a publication record of research in the areas of aging, stress, and ethnicity.
