Preventive Medicine Residencies

Applications are considered for preventive medicine residencies and the Master of Public Health (MPH) program separately. You must be accepted into the residency to apply for the MPH program as a part of the curriculum.  Acceptance into the residency program is contingent upon acceptance into the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. 

Completed applications must be received or postmarked in the Preventive Medicine Residency Program by October 31 preceding the June/July start date, in order to be considered for admission.  After the application and supporting material have been received, selected applicants will be invited for a formal interview usually held within the first week of December. The specific dates will be set forth in the letter of invitation.  For those requiring other interview times, special arrangements may be considered with advanced notice.

Requirements

  • Categorical applicants must be either in their final year of another ACGME accredited residency/fellowship or have completed a prior ACGME accredited clinical residency at the time of application. An evaluation from the program must be submitted to complete the application.
  • Applicants to the combined program are not required to have prior residency training.
  • Must have completed Steps 1 and 2 of the USMLE or COMLEX in no more than 3 attempts
    (Minimum score of 200 on Steps 1 and 2 and 500 for COMLEX).
  • Application and required documents must be post-marked by/received in our office by October 31 annually.
  • Current ECFMG certification is required for all international graduates.
  • Only J1 will be accepted/sponsored for General Preventive Medicine residents or combined Internal Medicine/General Preventive Medicine residents.
  • Aerospace Medicine applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents due to U.S. government support of the program.
  • All Preventive Medicine categorical or combined residency applicants must not have been away from clinical medicine for more than 2 years.
  • Must be eligible to obtain either a Texas Physician in Training permit (PIT) or full Texas license from the Texas Medical Board.
  • Must meet all admission requirements for the UTMB Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
  • Combined applicants MUST apply to both the combined program and categorical Internal Medicine separately to be considered as noted above.
