Prospective Students

Our department offers five primary educational programs that provide an array of educational opportunities for graduate students, physicians, medical students, and health science professionals.

All degrees from the programs within the Department of Preventive Medicine & Community Health are awarded by UTMB's Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

Application Information by Program

Applicants to Preventive Medicine Graduate Programs should carefully review the requirements and application information for the specific program they are applying to.

All internal and external applicants who are interested in applying to one of the degrees offered by the Clinical Science program must complete the following steps:

  1. Apply through the UTMB Application for Admission at https://www.utmb.edu/enrollmentservices/resources/admissions/graduate-school-of-biomedical-sciences-application-info. Applications must be complete!
  2. Pay appropriate application fees. If application fees are not paid, your application will not be reviewed.
  3. Submit official copies of your transcripts to the UTMB Health Office of Enrollment Services.If your school has the ability to submit transcripts electronically (through SPEEDE or other means), you must have them submitted electronically. Refer to Enrollment Services for a list of schools that can send via SPEEDE.
  4. Upload all documentation to your UTMB Application, including letters of reference, other documents, and unofficial transcripts. Uploading these will help to expedite screening and review of your application.

Internal/External Applicants

All internal applicants must complete the following steps:

  2. Apply through the UTMB Application for Admission at https://www.utmb.edu/enrollmentservices/resources/admissions/graduate-school-of-biomedical-sciences-application-info.

Apply through the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health's centralized application system, SOPHAS, at https://www.sophas.org.

International applicants must submit their results from EITHER the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELT). Information on minimum scores can be found here.

Upload all documentation, including three letters of reference, personal statement, transcripts, and test scores (if applicable). Transcripts must be included in the SOPHAS application in order to be reviewed. We recommend that at least one of your letters of recommendation come from a professor or faculty member who can speak to your academic abilities. 

Applicants to the Medical Humanities Graduate Program are expected to satisfy all the basic requirements for admission to a degree program in UTMB's Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences:

  • A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution or an advanced degree and training from an acceptable foreign institution of higher education.
  • A recommended grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale). Grades received in graduate courses, which are computed separately, are also considered in evaluation of the application.
  • The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is required if English is not the native language. The minimum requirement on the TOEFL is 550 or greater on the paper-based test, or 213 or greater on the computer-based test or 6.5 for the IELTS Academic Test.
  • Adequate subject preparation for the proposed graduate major.

Preference will be given to applicants with an advanced degree in bioethics, history, law, literature, philosophy, or religious studies; a closely allied program in the humanities or social sciences; or one of the health sciences or professions. Students entering with a B.A. degree alone will be evaluated after one year to determine whether they may continue beyond the master's degree. Personal interviews with members of the IMH faculty are encouraged. Demonstrated reading competence in at least one foreign language is strongly encouraged and will be required for students doing comparative or international research. Completed applications must be received by November 1st, March 1st, and June 1st. Applications are considered for admission for the subsequent term.
